In 2016, my life took an unexpected turn. I fell into a coma for three weeks due to double lung pneumonia that developed into ARDS. When I look back at my journey, I never expected that a single video—my “How to Bake a Cake” video that I uploaded back in 2011—would teach me so much about YouTube success. Back then it got no views and $0 ad revenue.
Two years later in 2013, before my coma, I’d taken on a 90-day challenge to post one video a day. That consistency triggered the YouTube algorithm to promote not just my new uploads but my entire channel. My "How To Bake A Cake" video suddenly was getting a few hundred views every day and was earning about $20/mo. (The cake had cost me less than $20 to make!) I learned that YouTube rewards creators who show up consistently because it knows viewers will keep coming back for more. This taught me one of my first big lessons: consistency is key. It also taught me not to give up on an older video. Plus I really liked the ROI: a $20 investment became a 100% ROI every single month after that!
After my coma, I studied everything I could about YouTube SEO. I used my “How to Bake a Cake” video as my testing ground—tweaking its title, thumbnail, tags, description, and backlinks. Each change brought me new insights and increased my earnings on that one video up to over $100/mo just because of the SEO tweaking I had done! I discovered that SEO absolutely matters, no matter what some gurus say. Tags are just one piece of a much bigger SEO puzzle, and when used strategically, they can make or break a video’s ranking and income.
Then came COVID. My “How to Bake a Cake” video went completely viral, jumping from that new $100/month in ad revenue based just on the SEO tweaking I had done to over $400/month as people turned to YouTube to learn how to bake cakes at home. But while the spike was exciting, it also showed me that ad revenue alone isn’t enough because after the virus died down it dropped right back down again. With over 6 million views, that video has earned over $10,000 in ad revenue which sounds amazing, however that was over more than a decade—not enough to build a business on.
That’s when I realized: the real value of YouTube isn’t in ad revenue.
